One is of a beloved dog that said goodbye -- plain as day -- to her shipmates. Another is about a ship's engineer in the Persian Gulf, who, in his delirium, relives the horse races he has seen. While another recounts a dying captain's stories of hurricanes and submarines as told to a little boy. Several focus on the loves and hopes of the families of those who make a living at sea. All will be remembered long after the last page of the book is turned.
