USDA Report on Farmland Lost to Sprawl |
|
Dec.7, 1999--Releasing a new national study that shows America's
conservation efforts falling short, Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman today
called for a renewed national commitment to preserving private land.
The Department of Agriculture said Monday that from 1992 to 1997, nearly 16
million acres of agricultural and forest land were developed. We are now losing 3 million acres per year of forest and agricultural land, double what was lost each year from 1982 to 1992. Nearly 2 billion tons of soil is eroding into waterways each year. Despite significant gains in erosion control during the past 15 years, there has been no additional improvement since 1995. Gross
wetland losses have increased to 54,000 acres annually on agricultural land
(Wetland gains are nearly 30,000 acres.) Tree and forest cover in urban areas is declining at an alarming rate. In the Chesapeake Bay region, for example, tree canopy has declined from 51% cover to 37% in the last 25 years.

Socioeconomic Data for Economic Development: An Assessment
The assessment provides an analysis of the strengths
and weaknesses of the current federal data system, and recommendations for
improving the relevance, timeliness, and accessibility of socioeconomic data
for research and practice. The report was funded by the U.S. Economic
Development Administration.
More specifically, the report provides:
- an explanation of the federal system for producing regional socioeconomic
data, including key agencies, coordination mechanisms, operating guidelines,
and recent critiques;
- a profile of socioeconomic data users, based on the survey results;
- data user ratings and comments on over 50 federal and other data series
and sources;
- findings concerning many practitioners' lack of education about data
resources, the complexity of the federal system, insufficient federal
budgets for regional data, and the lack of ongoing communication between
data users and providers; and
- recommendations for actions to address these concerns by federal
statistical agencies, the Office of Management and Budget, EDA, and the
trade associations representing data users.
