The
AARP Andrus Foundation-funded Intergenerational Entrepreneurship
Demonstration Project (IEDP) is the first project of the Retirement and
Intergenerational Studies Laboratory. In January 1993, efforts from STI and
the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management at Clemson
University allowed for the expansion of an existing Enterprise Market Program
at the John de la Howe School in McCormick, SC. McCormick County long time
residents and new retirees to the area serve side by side as volunteer mentors
to the at-risk youth at John de la Howe. Sharing lifetime skills and
experiences, retirees help the youth operate their own country market out of a
renovated dairy barn at the school. Today the market continues to operate out
of the barn and is now known as "Howe-To Industries".
The
Intergenerational Entrepreneurship Demonstration Project is serving as a
pilot program and has great potential to be initiated in a number of settings.
This nationally recognized project is expected to serve as a model for further
entrepreneurial and community building intergenerational volunteer
programs.
Howe-To Industries is serviced by a monthly newsletter.
