Overview
The South Carolina Water Resources Center (SCWRC) is one of 54 institutes established by the U.S. Congress through the Water Resources Research Act of 1964. The SCWRC receives an annual federal matching grant administered by the U.S. Geological Survey. In South Carolina a decision was made to focus the research emphasis of SCWRC on the study of reservoirs and the watersheds in which these reservoirs are contained.
The reservoirs of South Carolina and the rivers and
streams that feed them are under increasing pressure because of the many uses they provide.
Everything from hydroelectric power generation, nuclear plant cooling, drinking water, sewage disposal and non-point source pollution disposal to water-based recreation and tourism activities can be linked to these waterways and reservoirs. The SCWRC has formed an advisory board composed of stakeholders in our water resources from both the public and private sector. This group helps guide the research emphasis of the center as well as help find additional funding avenues.
